ABSTRACT
Malaria disease is majorly vector-borne and possess a global health challenge to both human and animals respectively. The disease still stands as a prominent public health challenge, causing diseases and death in communities with poor and low resources globally. The development of chloroquine resistance in the P. falciparum parasite caused a significant setback in the fight against malaria. Due to the increasing resistance of antimalarial drug to falciparum malaria, of which one of the major causes of this resistance in patients is taking incomplete dosage of malaria drug, there is a danger of the ineffectiveness of these drugs, malaria control and possible elimination This study evaluates the evidence of emerging Coartem resistant Falciparum Malaria in Benin metropolis. This study included hundred patients who were compared to one hundred (100) healthy individuals as control. A total of 2ml of blood was collected from each patient and was analyzed using two Malaria Parasite testing techniques which are the Giemsa and Field staining technique (A and B) respectively. The data was analyzed using the student’ s T-test from the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Means of the same row or column with different superscript letters differ significantly at 95% level of confidence (p<0.05). This study checked resistance to antimalarial drug using the full blood count levels. This included packed cell volume, eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes and white blood cell counts. The quantitative analysis of these parameters showed that before treatment the packed cell volume and white blood cell count values showed a significant difference compared to the control. After treatment, there was no significant difference in Packed cell volume and White Blood Cell count values as compared to the control. There was no significant difference in the values of Neutrophils, Lymphocytes and Eosinophils before and after treatment. The results showed that there was significant difference in the WBC and PCV of coartem resistant patients before treatment with quinine but no significant difference was observed after treatment with quinine indicative of an emerging resistance to coartem drug.
