ABSTRACT
The study examines the evaluation of visitors’ satisfaction and perception on animal welfare in Ogba Zoological Garden and Nature Park. 75% sampling intensity was used to randomly select 98 visitors/tourist. The respondents comprise visitors/tourist patronizing the zoo per day. A total of ninety-eight (98) copies of questionnaires were used to sample the respondent in the study area. Data were collected using primary and secondary sources. The questionnaire was used to elicit information from the visitors/tourist, personal interview with the respondents were also carried out to get more information. The data were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages summarized in tables and charts and inferential statistical with the use of analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% level of significance. The means of variables that were significant at 5% level were separated with Duncan new multiple range test. From the results majorities (54.3%) of the visitors were male while most (42.5%) fall within the age range of 20-30 years. The bulk of the respondents (47.7%) had secondary educational qualification. (42%) of the visitors visit the zoo occasionally while 20,18,15 and 5% visit the zoo during festive period. Figure 4.1 the results also revealed that (37.2%) of the zoo visitors visit the zoo for recreational purpose. It was claimed by vast majority (45.7%) that the animal enclosures were fairly arranged and they were of the opinion that the zoo enclosures were not well maintained.
The result also revealed that the majority of the visitors had a positive notion toward the captive animal enclosures. The findings further revealed that 100% of the visitors show a high tendency of positive perception about the captive animals. The visitors (53.2%) claimed that they wish to visit the zoo some other time, while (69.1%) have a higher sense of connection to nature and (61.7%) were of the opinion for the support for conservation of animals. Though the vast majorities (28%) of the visitors perceived positive perception about the animal behavior in conformity of their visit as they claim that the animal display calm behavior upon their visit to the enclosure. However, the results show that substantial numbers (45%) of the zoo visitors display their dissatisfaction about the animal welfare and their environment. The respondents (78%) shows negative opinion toward the zoo animal welfare. Therefore, the result revealed that majorities of respondents (57.4%) shows a remarkable displeasure on the animal appearance and care. More so (66%) of the visitors had an up-close view of the animal while (53.2%) experience feeding and social behavior of the animals and (40.4%) claimed that I learnt about the history of the zoo animals. From the findings of this study it is recommended that the zoo manager should improve on the animal welfare in relation to the enclosure and their environment.
