ABSTRACT
Hunteria umbellata has been traditionally used in folk medicine for the management of various diseases. This study aims to evaluate the sedative effects of the methanolic seed extract derived from Hunteria umbellata on mice using the Rota rod model. Twenty mice were randomly divided into five groups and administered varying doses of the plant extract, diazepam and distilled water. Sedative effects were assessed using the Rota rod apparatus, a standard method for evaluating motor coordination and sedation in rodents. The time each mouse remained on the Rota rod before falling off was recorded and analyzed. Preliminary findings indicate an insignificant relationship between the methanolic seed extract and sedation in mice. Compared to the standard diazepam which resulted in increased sedative effects, as evidenced by decreased retention time on the Rota rod. In summary, the methanol seed extract of Hunteria umbellata does not possess any sedative effect.
