EVALUATION OF THE MICROBIAL PROFILE OF HOME-MADE HERBAL CONCOCTION

 ABSTRACT

Herbal medicine is defined by (World Health Organization) as a fresh or dry, fractioned or pulverised plant material whichhave been collated by reasons of their great functions against many deadly microorganisms and ailments. The aim of this research was to access the microbial profile of home made herbal concoction. The herbal concoction was prepared under hygienic condition using Azadirachta indica(Neem plant), Moriga oleifera(Moringa plant), Vernonia amygdalina(Bitterleaf), Alium sativa(Garlic)andZingiber officinale(Ginger). After preparation, samples were introduced into a universal bottle and transported to the laboratory every 12 hours for 3 days[1]  for microbiological examination. Samples from the concoction was cultured on nutrient agar an MacConkey agarwhich were incubated at 37 ℃ for 24 hours.The isolates were identified using standard bacteriological tests.The bacterial isolates obtained from the samples were Pseudomonasaeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus spp. The bacterial isolates showed a very high resistance to the antibiotics as none of the isolates was susceptible to more than 3 of the 9 Antibiotics used. Given that the adverse effects of herbal medicines might occasionally be severe and life threatening for patients, it is necessary to assess the current pharmacovigilance system and assure the incorporation of herbal concoctions.
