ABSTRACT
Hypoglycaemic/Antihyperglycaemic agents are substances capable of lowering glucose levels in the blood. They are commonly used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus ( DM). Apart from the conventional oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA), there is a long history of using plants to treat diabetes – especially in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Bombax buonopozense is a tree native to the rainforests of the West African region. Locally, various parts of the plant have been prepared and used in treating diseases like; rheumatism, cough, dysentery, malaria, and other ailments. This study evaluates the hypoglycaemic effect of B. buonopozense on rats. Hyperglycaemia was induced in rats by intraperitoneal (i.p) injections of streptozotocin (STZ) at a dose of 45mg/kg body weight. Methanolic stem bark extract of B. buonopozense was administered orally at increasing doses of 200, 400, and 800mg/kg body weight to the streptozotocin-induced hyperglycaemic rats. A significant decrease in fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels after daily administration for 7 days was observed. The study, therefore, indicates that the stem bark of bombax buonopozense shows a significant hypoglycemic effect, suggesting the potential for use in the treatment of diabetes mellitus
