ABSTRACT

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of antidepressants such as paroxetine, and can negatively impact the quality of life of individuals who experience it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Anthocleista djalonensis on sperm parameters in male rats with paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction. The study investigated the potentials of Anthocleista djalonensis, a medicinal plant, to ameliorate the effect of paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in male rats. The stem bark of Anthocleista djalonensis were dried and ground to powdered form. 150 grams of the powder was dissolved in 2.5 litres of ethanol and left for 72 hours. It was then filtered with a white cloth and whatman filter paper and the filtrate concentrated using a rotary evaporator at an optimum temperature of 40oC. The resulting sample was then freeze dried. Twelve male wistar rats divided in four groups labelled A-D were used for this study. Group A was the control, group B-D were administered with 10 mg/kg body weight of rat for seven days. Thereafter, group B was administered 200 mg b.wt of the stem bark extract of Anthocleista djalonensis , group C 50 mg/kg b.wt of standard drug Tadalafil while group D was untreated. Sperm parameters which includes; sperm motility, sperm viability, sperm count were assessed using standard procedures. The results showed that treatment with paroxetine significantly impaired sperm count, motility, and viability, while treatment with Anthocleista djalonensis significantly improved these parameters. These findings suggest that Anthocleista djalonensis has a protective effect on sperm parameters in male rats with paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction. However the standard drug Tadalafil proved to be more effective.
