EVALUATION OF THE CHALLENGES THAT SOCIAL WORK PROFESSIONALS ENCOUNTER IN SELECTED SOCIAL WELFARE CENTRES IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study looked at an evaluate of the challenges social work professionals encounter in selected social welfare centres in Benin City, Edo state, Nigeria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the challenges social work professionals encounter in selected social welfare centres in Benin city. The research questions asked to achieve the objective of the study were as follows; What are the challenges faced by social work professionals in social welfare centres, What are the different types of social welfare centres available, and What is the overall long-term effects of the challenges faced by social work professionals in social welfare centres.The sample size was 301 participants chosen from the study population using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling, the research instrument utilized was the questionnaire. Conclusion drawn from the analysis of the data retrieved from the questionnaire indicates that the a dedicated group of social workers committed to serving their communities despite facing significant challenges. These challenges included inadequate funding, limited resources, and a lack of public recognition for the profession. Additionally, social workers reported feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of cases they manage and the complex needs of their clients. However, the research also highlighted the resilience and resourcefulness of social workers in Benin City. Participants described a strong sense of professional identity and a commitment to social justice. They employed various coping mechanisms to manage stress, including social support networks and personal self-care practices.Recommendations were made based on the findings and one of the recommendations: There is a clear need for increased government funding for social service programs in Benin City. This would allow for the hiring of more social workers, the provision of adequate resources, and the development of more comprehensive support services for vulnerable populations.
