EVALUATION OF THE BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN THE ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACT OF THE ROOTS OF AZANZA GARCKEANA

Abstract

The medicinal plant Azanza garckeana also known as goron tula is found in Gombe state, Nigeria. The plant is also found in other African countries like Botswana and Malawi. This plant has a long history of use due to its therapeutic benefits. This study uses an effective analytical method of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the bioactive compounds present in the ethyl acetate extract of Azanza garckeana roots. Thirty-three (33) bioactive compounds were found in the ethyl acetate extract, with Silane,ethenyldimethoxymethyl- having the lowest peak concentration of 0.47%. n-Hexadecanoic acid also known as palmitic acid had the highest peak concentration of 20.67%, this compound showed antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Hexadecanoic acid,2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)ethyl ester plays a role as an antioxidant. Undecanoic acid possesses Antibacterial, Antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Also, 3-(3-Thienyl)pyridine has antimicrobial activity. The findings of this research highlight the importance of Azanza garckeana roots as a valuable natural resource for potential therapeutic agents and encourage further exploration of it's bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical purposes.
