Abstract
We investigated the effects of Vitamin E on Isoniazid induced peripheral neuropathy and used 6 groups consisting of 5 animals in each group.
The study was important in ascertaining the dose of Isoniazid that would cause peripheral neuropathy as well as determining either the positive or negative effect of Vitamin E on attenuating peripheral neuropathy induced by Isoniazid.
Adult Wister rats of both sexes were used in the pilot studies to ensure the dose capable of inducing peripheral neuropathy without resulting in death, Isoniazid was given to the rats and Pyridoxine and Vitamin E were also given to different group of rats.
The Isoniazid group had the worst result in all behavioural model used, Pyridoxine had better results than all groups except in Tail flick test and Forced Swim test, Vitamin E low dose (23.6mg) had best result in Skin sensation test and deionized group had best result in the Forced swim test.
This study suggests that Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) has positive effect on attenuating peripheral neuropathy induced by Isoniazid.
