EVALUATION OF THE ANTICANCER POTENTIAL OF METHANOL EXTRACT OF FICUS EXASPERATA ON 1, 2 DIMETHYL HYDRAZINE INDUCED COLON CANCER WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

The present study investigates the potential anticancer effects of Ficus exasperata's methanol extract on colon cancer caused by 1, 2 dimethyl hydrazine (DMH) in wistar rats. Colon cancer is a global health problem, requiring the development of new therapeutic agents. The protective effects of Ficus exasperata extract were investigated using bilirubin, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and red blood cell (RBC) distribution as biomarkers. A healthy control, and DMH-induced rats were all tested with different amounts of Ficus exasperata extract in experimental groups. Using established biochemical assays, serum levels of bilirubin and GGT were determined after a specific treatment period. In addition, Red blood cell distribution width was determined by hematological analysis. Bilirubin and GGT are biomarkers for the proper functioning of the liver, so lower or higher levels may indicate a liver damage or a healthy liver. In the DMH-induced group, there was a significant increase (P > 0.05) in the serum bilirubin and GGT levels, as well as a decrease in red blood cell distribution relative to the control group. In contrast, rats treated with Ficus exasperata extract experienced a dose-dependent decrease in bilirubin and GGT levels ( p < 0.05), as well as a significant increase in red blood cell distribution, suggesting potential anticancer effects. According to these results, Ficus exasperata extract has a lot of promise as an anticancer agent.
