ABSTRACT
Fuel subsidy removal policy is a significant and often controversial economic measure implemented by governments worldwide. The decision to remove fuel subsidies is driven by variety of factors including fiscal constraints and pursuit for economic reform. One-fourth of Nigeria’s government expenditure is allocated to subsidizing fuels. Fuel subsidy in Nigeria accounts for about a quarter of government spending. Rapid urbanization and industrialization are factors that negatively impacts air quality. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal policy on air quality in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study examines the concentration of air quality parameters such a carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and aerosols for pre and post fuel subsidy removal policy. This study adopted Geographic Information System (GIS) using Sentinel5p data. The result of the study revealed a decrease in the concentration levels of these pollutants following the subsidy removal. However, carbon monoxide was reveals to be not significant (p>0.05) and nitrogen dioxide was established to be non-significant (P=0) due to insufficient evidence contradicting the hypothesis and the observation that the effect was zero. The observed decrease in aerosols revealed highly significant differences (p<0.01) post fuel subsidy removal policy, which led to improved air quality. This study also provided potential recommendations on how to achieve a clean and sustainable environment in Lagos State. These findings emphasize the importance of evidence-based policy decisions to address air pollution and its potential benefits for public health in Lagos State, Nigeria.
