ABSTRACT
The utilization of Citrus sinensis seeds for oil production presents a promising opportunity to address environmental challenges associated with waste management in the sweet orange industry. This study aimed to extract oil from Citrus sinensis seeds sourced in Benin City, Nigeria, using a solvent extraction method and evaluate the presence and concentration of heavy metals in the extracted oil. The analysis revealed the presence of various heavy metals, including cadmium and lead, with concentrations exceeding WHO standards, raising concerns about potential health risks. The findings underscore the importance of monitoring and regulating heavy metal levels in agricultural products to ensure food safety. Recommendations include implementing quality control measures, identifying sources of contamination, raising public awareness, enhancing regulatory oversight, diversifying oil sources, and conducting further research on remediation techniques. By addressing these recommendations, stakeholders can promote the safety, quality, and sustainability of Citrus sinensis seed oil production, contributing to public health and environmental protection.
