ABSTRACT
Evaluation of semen characteristics and testicular weights of growing rabbits bucks served pure stem juice extract of bush cane. The research was carried out at the rabbit experimental unit of the University of Benin Farm Project, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Eighteen mixed breed (New Zealand and Dutch), 5 to 6 weeks of age were randomly assigned using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) into three treatment groups and subdivided into three replicates of two rabbits each. Treatment one was the control and was not administered the extract; while treatment two and three were administered 1.5ml and 3.0ml of the bush cane pure stem extract. The semen samples were collected using Artificial Virginia (AV) at the end of experimental period. The testicular weights were also obtained from the slaughter rabbit bucks. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 0.05% level of significance [using General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SAS system, 2024] and significant means were separated using the Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test. The results indicated that bush cane pure stem juice extract showed a significant influence on Sperm Concentration, mortility and sperm progressivity at 1.5ml daily dose administration. It could be recommended that bush cane pure stem juice extract should be administered to rabbit bucks at 1.5ml/day beyond which the effects may be detrimental.
