ABSTRACT

A study was carried out on the evaluation of seed pre-treatment of genetic and germination parameters on Zea mays (maize). The aim of the study was to evaluate seed pre-treatment influence on genetic and germination parameters of maize (Zea mays). The experiment was carried out in the laboratory for a period of . Three different experiments were conducted, each having four treatments consisting of one control and 3 replicates of different concentrations of priming agents; ascorbic acid, SNP and Thio urea respectively. Each replicate had the following concentrations: 50ppm, 250ppm and 450ppm. 18 seeds were used for each treatment making it a total of 540 seeds that were used for the entire experiment. Germination results were taken for a period of 9 days. At the end of the germination experiment, it was observed that the primed seeds had significantly higher germination rate than the control. However, there were no significant differences observed between the different priming agents. Results were taken for the germination rate and germination percentage. The results showed that the germination percentage and germination rates differed with different chemo-printer which elicited significance (p < 0.05). The overall results at the end of the experiment confirmed the hypothesis that seed pre-treatment is an effective technique to improve the germination percentage, germination rate and seedling growth. However, if immediate sowing is possible, priming is recommended to robustly harvest better benefits when compared with the hydrationdehydration method.
