ABSTRACT

The study aimed to evaluate the renoprotective potential of ethanol extract from the leaves of Phyllanthus amarus in a rat model with induced renal impairment using carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), a known inducer of oxidative stress leading to renal damage. Phyllanthus amarus, recognized for its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, was chosen for its potential therapeutic benefits. Adult male Wistar rats were segregated into distinct groups: control, CCl4- induced, and those pretreated with Phyllanthus amarus before CCl4 induction. Assessment of renal function included analyzing serum creatinine and protein levels.The findings revealed a substantial rise in serum creatinine, and protein levels in the CCl4-induced group compared to the control. However, rats that received pretreatment with the ethanol extract from Phyllanthus amarus leaves exhibited a significant reduction in these indices, indicating a potential protective influence on renal function. This study emphasizes the potential nephroprotective role of Phyllanthus amarus leaves against CCl4-induced renal impairment, likely attributed to its bioactive properties. Further research investigating the underlying mechanisms and comprehensive clinical trials are essential to affirm the therapeutic efficacy of Phyllanthus amarus in renal disorders.
