Abstract

The study was carried out to evaluate nutrient and chemical composition of Thaumatoccocus daniellii stems. The stems of Thaumatoccocus daniellii were collected from Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management Thaumatoccocus daniellii wild growing plant area, in University of Benin, Benin City. The stems were taken to the main laboratory of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City. The proximate and chemical composition were carried out according to AOAC official method. The experiment was laid out in complete randomized design (CRD) with three treatments and each replicated five times. Data collected were subjected to inferential statistics using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% level of significance. The results revealed significant difference (P<0.05) in all the proximate composition except NFE among the samples of Thaumatoccocus daniellii used for this study. T. daniellii stems contained contain an average of percentage moisture content (12.82±0.6%), crude protein (28.02±0.04%), ash content (8.13±0.07%), ether extract (1.63±0.02%), crude fibre (7.99±0.07%) and nitrogen free extract (41.35±0.03%). The average phytochemical composition of T. daniellii stems are alkanoids (0.24±0.06%), saponin (1.64±0.59%), flavonoids (3.46±0.62%), phenol (2.30±0.08%), and tannin (1.87±0.42%). The results revealed significant difference (P<0.05) in all the heavy metal content evaluated among the samples of T. daniellii stems under review. The average mineral composition of T. daniellii stems were calcium (0.28±0.02mg/kg), phosphorus (0.36±0.1 mg/kg), potassium (2.41±0.06 mg/kg), magnesium (0.28±0.02 mg/kg) and sodium (0.14±0.02mg/kg). In conclusion, the study was a scientific validation that T. daniellii stems contains high nutrients and essential minerals substances that produce definite physiological action on the body of livestock and humans if consumed.
