EVALUATION OF PAPER WASTE GENERATION AND DISPOSAL IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

One of the major problems confronting Nigerian cities today is poor solid waste management. In spite of the efforts made by the Federal Government and some States Government in Nigeria to tackle the problem, there has been no remarkable solution to indiscriminate disposal of wastes. To this end, the research examined paper waste generation and disposal in Egor Local Government Area. The objectives of the research are to examine the sources of paper waste generated by households as well as the factors responsible for indiscriminate disposal of paper waste in Egor Local Government Area. A total of 300 copies of questionnaire which formed the primary source of data were administered in the ten political wards in Egor Local Government Area. The data generated were analyzed using frequency tables and bar charts to examine respondents socio-economic characteristics as well as paper waste generation and disposal by households in Egor Local Government Area. The study revealed that the indiscriminate disposal of paper waste in Egor Local Government Area is attributed to absence of stringent penalty for waste defaulters, lack of refuse bins and poor environmental enlightenment of residents in Egor Local Government Area. The study recommends among others that proper enlightenment of the residents on proper waste disposal and that adequate refuse bins should be provided and distributed evenly in Egor Local Government Area as a measure to resolving the problem of indiscriminate disposal of paper waste in Egor Local Government Area.
