ABSTRACT

Spent mushroom compost is a by-product of mushroom production. Application of spent Mushroom compost to agricultural soil has been widely practiced as one of the approach to improve crop productivity and soil fertility. This study evaluated the microbial quality of spent mushroom compost. Assessment of the microbial quality was based on standard procedures and samples of spent mushroom compost used were obtained from the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology of the University Of Benin and also from Mycofarm situated at Ishior. The results showed the microbial load count of sample of spent mushroom compost from Mycofarm with a count of 29.8 ± 0.77 x 104 greater than the microbial load count of sample of spent mushroom compost from the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology with a count of 1.10 ± 2.40 x 104. The results showed the presence of both bacteria and fungi, in which sample obtained from Mycofarm showed similar microbial load with the samples obtained from the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology. The result showed the presence of  bacteria such as Enterobacter cloacae, Proteus mirabilisa, Escherichia coli and Bacillus sublitis and the presence of fungi suchas Aspergillus niger, Mucor mucedo, Penicillium sp, Rihizopus arrhizus.
