ABSTRACT
The experiment was conducted in the department of Crop Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture; University of Benin, Benin City. It involved using serial dilution process and agar plate method to determine microbial diversity present in sampled soil and also analyzing the physical and chemical composition of the experimental soil. The experiment was laid out in a completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The data was analysed using Gen-stat version 12 and separated using Student-Newman-Keul test. The results of this experiment showed the presence of six fungal isolates (Trichoderma sp, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium sp, Alternaria sp, Saccharomyces cerevisae, and Neurospora sp) and three bacterial isolates (Micrococcus sp, Bacillus sp, and Pseudomonas sp) in soil cultivated with okra under different watering regimes. Top soils in fungi(22.50×10⁵cfu/g) and bacteria (268.0×10⁵cfu/g) exhibited the highest colonyforming units. From the results obtained, the effect of the interaction between soil treatment and soil incubation period is highly significant on the microbial diversity and population for bacteria. Based on the findings in this study, it was recommended that top soil coupled with any watering regime (every day, every two days and every three days) should be used to maintain consistent microbial population of the soil in Okra, thereby improving the general health and fertility of the soil.
