EVALUATION OF LIPID PROFILE IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS ATTENDING UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

 

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and dyslipidemia is often associated with hypertension, further increasing cardiovascular risk. Evaluation of lipid profiles in hypertensive patients is essential for assessing this risk and guiding treatment strategies. The aim of this study was to assess the lipid profiles of hypertensive patients and their association with cardiovascular risk factors. Blood samples were collected from total of one hundred and four (104) subjects, fifty two (52) hypertensive patients and fifty two (52) normotensive subjects with the age range of 20 to 80 years. Total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), were analyzed using standard method. Demographic data and anthropometric measurements were also recorded. The association between lipid profile parameters and cardiovascular risk factors was assessed using correlation analysis. The mean diastolic and Systolic blood pressure in hypertensive were higher than normotensive subjects (P<0.001). The mean±SEM of total cholesterol (TC) (240.35±8.11) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (166.98±7.50) were increased compared to normotensive subjects (P<0.001). The levels of triglyceride (TG) (112.15± 6.96) were also statistically significant (P=0.018). However, no significant difference in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (46.38±2.53) of hypertensive and normotensive subjects (P=0.365) was observed. Significant increase in the artherogenic (AIP, CRR and AC) (P<0.001) were also observed. In conclusion, this study highlights the high prevalence of dyslipidemia in hypertensive patients and its association with cardiovascular risk factors. This study suggests that regular monitoring of lipid profile parameters is essential in hypertensive patients to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. Early detection and management of dyslipidemia can help improve outcomes in this population
