EVALUATION OF IMPACTS OF FOREST DEGRADATION ON THE LIVELIHOOD OF THE SELECTED RURAL COMMUNITIES IN EDO SOUTH ECOLOGICAL ZONE

                                                              ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to forest degradation on the livelihood of selected rural communities in this Edo  south ecological zone ,Edo state Nigeria. Ninety-eight  copies of questionnaires were administered  on adjoining communities were data obtained are used in multi stage sampling procedure, the  data were collected and were analyzed using descriptive statistics(i.e frequency and percentage)  and inferential statistics involved “ t”-test  and ANOVA.   The result revealed that there are significant differences ( p < 0.05) among the rate of depletion  between  Ehor and Sokponba forest  reserve, further analysis identified forest reserves hecterage is dominated by farm land and plantation, in which the rate of degradation is fast in Sokponba forest reserve than Ehor forest reserve. it also shows that there are no significant differences ( p > 0.05) in various allocated taungya farm for past 10 years, further analysis identified farmers in rural communities no longer practices taungya farming system, result shows that  there are no significant differences ( p > 0.05) among the Number of Taungya farmers for past 10 years in adjoining communities, further analysis identified that number of taungya farmers in adjoining community is rare.  result also revealed there are significant differences ( p < 0.05) among the idenitified impacts of forest degradation, further analysis identified forest products faces disappearance. Therefore, it is recommended that government should assists the conservation management and encourage afforestation programmes with adequate funds.
