ABSTRACT
This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Pleurotus ostreatus (Oyster
mushroom) on haematology parameters in rats. Twenty rats were divided into four groups: a
control group administered distilled water, and three treatment groups administered 100, 200,
and 400 mg/kg per body weight of the ethanol extract orally for 28 days. Haematological
parameters, including white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB),
hematocrit (HCT), platelets (PLT), and other indices , were analyzed using an automated blood
analyzer. The results indicated that the extract did not significantly alter most haematological
parameters at the tested doses. However, a significant reduction in white blood cell count and
platelet concentration was observed at the 200mg/kg dose, suggesting potential
immunomodulatory and anticoagulant effects. These findings imply that Pleurotus ostreatus
extract may influence immune responses and blood coagulation at certain doses. Conclusively,
while the extract is relatively safe at the tested doses, caution should be exercised, particularly at
higher concentrations, due to its potential effects on immune and coagulation systems.
