ABSTRACT
Hunteria umbellata has many pharmacological properties and it is used for several medicinal purposes. This study was carried out to investigate the anxiolytic activities of methanol seed extract of Hunteria umbellata in mice using the elevated plus maze model. Mice weighing 22.8- 30g were used for this study. Twenty mice were divided into five groups with four mice in each group. The seeds were collected, dried, powdered and then extracted using methanol in Soxhlet apparatus to get the extract. Findings from the study showed little anxiolytic effect using the methanol seed extract of Hunteria umbellata in mice in the elevated plus maze as compared with the control and standard drug (Diazepam) in the doses administered, as they spent more time in the closed arm than in the open arm. Conclusively with the result from this research, it can be inferred that the plant extract possesses little anxiolytic effects at the doses administered.
