ABSTRACT
The effect of the ethanol extract of Buchholzia corriacea seed, Carica papaya leaf and Sida acuta leaf on ethanol induced acute gastric damage were studied in rats pretreated with a combination of the three plant extract as compared with cimetidine a standard drug used for ulcer management. Results showed that the polyherbal formulation had comparable ulcer protective potency with cimetidine. The extract at 100, 200 and 400mg/kg body weight significantly at (P<0.05) and dose dependently suppressed the ulerogenic effect induced by ethanol in rat gastric mucosa. The extract was administered orally for 8 days once a day. On the eight day, the animals were fasted for 24 hours and ulcer was induced by oral administration of 1ml ethanol to each animal. 30 minutes later the animals where anesthetized by placing them in an air tight plastic container containing chloroform. They were sacrificed to examine their stomach for ulceration. The haematological assay showed that the extract at 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight had no significant difference at (P<0.05) in immune stimulating cells and blood platelets with the positive control. The body mass index of the animals showed no significant differenced during the period of administration and only the kidney at 200mg/kg showed significant difference at (P<0.05) relative to positive control.
