ABSTRACT
Polyherbal teas have shown a noteworthy rise in popularity and use recently, perhaps as a result of their alleged advantages in the treatment of numerous chronic conditions. This study aim at evaluating the “Antiasthmatic Activity of Polyherbal Formulated Tea (Citrus limon, Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa, Syzygium aromaticum, Allium sativum, and Moringa olifera)”. The guinea pigs were divided into four group with four animals in each group. The Group 1-4 were administered distilled water (2.0 ml), salbutamol (0.5 mg/kg), 5 mg/kg, and 10 mg/kg of the Polyherbal formulated tea respectively for 14 dayhistamine aerosol allengen (0.2ml/kg). The animals were sensitized with ovalbumin intraperitoneally (100mg/kg), while the second day received ovalbumin intramuscularly (50mg/kg). After this treatment, the animals were exposed to histamine aerosal and then the preconvulsive dysnea they exhibited was measured on the fifteen day. Animals were sacrificed and bloods were collected into plain containers for antioxidant analysis. The following analyses were carried out: preconvulsive dysnea, superoxide dismutase, malondealdehyde, catalase, glutathione reductase, and peroxidase, trachea wall thickness, and histology of the lungs. From the results, it shows that polyherbalformulated tea on latency to preconvulsive dyspnea (PCD), it increases the latency to preconvulsive dyspnea when compared to asthma control(***P<0.001; *P<0.05) . While the extract at 5 mg/kg and salbutamol (0.5 mg/kg) reduced (***P <0.001, *P<0.05) the trachea wall thickness in guinea pigs when compared to asthma control. The Polyherbal formulated tea increases the level of glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase when compared to asthma control (*p< 0.05; **p<0.01). The levels of malondialdehyde is significantly decreased (****P< 0.0001; *P <0.05) guinea pig’s blood when compared to asthma control. In Conclusion, polyherbal-formulated tea possesses anti-asthmatic properties and can be used in the treatment of asthma.
