ABSTRACT
The menstrual cycle is the natural changes that occurs in the endometrium of the uterus during the reproductive life of female, involving structural, functional and hormonal changes. The study was aimed at evaluating the neutrophil-lymphocytes, monocyte-lymphocytes and the platelets-lymphocytes ratios during the menstrual and the luteal phases of menstrual cycle in young adult females. A population of premenopausal healthy subjects within the age range of 18-30 were used and this study was carried out across different geopolitical zones in Benin City. Subjects were asked to complete a medical and gynecological questionnaire. The clinical history of the subjects was noted and different phases of menstrual cycle were determined by the gynaecological history. The neutrophils lymphocyte ratio, monocytes lymphocytes ratio and platelets lymphocytes ratio indices were accessed, result showed significant difference in platelets lymphocyte ratio and monocytes lymphocytes ratio (p<0.05, respectively), while neutrophil lymphocyte ratio showed no significant difference in both luteal and menstrual phase. In conclusion, the significant differences in platelets lymphocyte ratio and monocyte lymphocyte ratio is due to the influence of active suboptimal inflammatory processes by the ovaries during the Menstrual cycle.
