ABSTRACT

Over the years, obesity has received considerable attention as a major health hazard. This condition, which is characterized by the accumulation of excess body fat has been discovered to cause or exacerbate various health problems both independently and in association with other diseases including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke and various vascular and coagulation diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the FVIII concentration in young obese females. To achieve this, 60 female subjects were recruited for this study within the age range of 18 and 25 years, Thirty normal weight subjects as control and Thirty Obese females for the experimental group. Obesity for this study was recognized as BMI greater or equal 30kgm/m2. 5mls of blood samples were collected into lithium heparin bottles for factor VIII estimation in the laboratory using single channel semi automated coagulometer method. Our results showed no statistical significant difference (p<0.05) in Factor viii concentration. In conclusion the increase in the concentration of factors VIII and other  related coagulation disorders found in obese patients may not be dependent on the BMI alone but certain other underlying factors. However, an all-inclusive mechanism is yet to be fully understood.
