The first chapter succeeded in giving an overview on the uses of language in a speech setting which is the Preacher teaching a sermon and passing out necessary information to the congregation. It formed the basis for the execution of this research, and provided the guidelines by which the research was subsequently carried out. The major contribution of this chapter was the introduction of the research topic.
The second chapter started by introducing some concepts associated closely related to the research, defining these concepts as well as an in depth explanation of each concepts. The concepts ranged from language as related to language use and also different definitions of register by different authors. The chapter also discussed on the Christian religion and the two major denominations of the religion that is found in Nigeria. The chapter then discusses previous works by scholars that were done in the bid to analyse the form of language use by preachers when preaching.
Chapter three introduced us to the theoretical framework. The case-study framework was adopted in order to analyse the speech event of preaching by the preacher. The theoretical framework which is ethnography of communication analyses everything that concerns the flow of communication within a speech event. This chapter was to provide guidelines in carrying out the next chapter.
The following chapter, chapter 4 was the data analysis, data collected from the 5 sermons were and thoroughly analysed. Complete attention to details was given to the data analysis thereby making the data analysis very critical.
