ABSTRACT
This study is predicated on the ethnography of Pidgin use in schools in Nigeria. It is primarily carried out to describe Pidgin language; it's usage, effects and roles in schools in Nigeria. The research would reveal that pidgin language is a language of communication in schools. It would also reveal that it is a language of instruction and a unifying language suitable to breaching language barrier amongst users that are from various backgrounds in the school environment.
Pidgin use in schools in Nigeria is adopted for effective learning acquisition, and it also serves as a unifying language in schools considering the slur on Nigerian indigenous languages by the colonial masters, hence the necessity of pidgin use in schools in Nigeria. Pidgin language is rich in its features. Users trends to savour in its richness in terms of figurative expressions, neologism and sentence patterns. These features gives refinement to users' diction and gives them freelance in using the language without observing requisite rules as required in Standard English usage.
This study examines the various written and recorded speeches used by students and teachers in various Schools across Nigeria with a view of establishing effective communication. With this we have been able to discover that Pidgin use in schools in Nigerian breaches the barrier of communication amongst users from different background and that the usage of the language comes handy as a language of instruction in the classroom. Therefore, the language is indispensable to users in schools in Nigeria considering the aforementioned attributes and importance of the language.
