ABSTRACT
Lead and cadmium are naturally occurring heavy metals, possessing deleterious health effects. Adverse health effects of lead and cadmium exposure include learning disabilities, an increased risk of antisocial behavior, reduced fertility, and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to assess the mitigating effect of Ethanolic Extract of Persea americana phytowaste on lipid profile, antioxidants and hematological toxicity induced by co-administration of lead and cadmium in Wistar rats. The animals were divided into five groups with each group having five rats. Group one which served as the control were administered distilled water, group two which served as the heavy metal group was administered lead and cadmium (200mg lead and 100mg cadmium dissolved in drinking water), group three was the standard group and was administered Zinc and Selenium (1.5mg/kg and 1.0mg/kg), group four and five received 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg doses of the extract with lead and cadmium being introduced in their drinking water. The parameters analyzed were concentration of lead and cadmium on the heart and blood, hematological parameters, antioxidant and lipid peroxidation of the blood and heart. The results showed significant decrease (p< 0.05) in cadmium level in EEPAP 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg in the heart and blood when compared to the control. A significant decrease (p<0.05) was observed in MDA level in 500mg/kg EEPAP group when compared to the control. The assessment of the ethanolic extract of Persea americana Phytowaste on lead and cadmium in rats demonstrates promising potential. The study sheds light on the extract’s ability to potentially mitigate the harmful effects of lead and cadmium on the heart, as indicated by its potency against the various parameters tested.
