ABSTRACT
Resistance to broad spectrum beta lactams, mediated by extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase is an increasing problem. The production of these enzymes in clinical infections can result in treatment failure. The aim of the study was to identify and determine ESBLs and carbapenemase producing Gram-negative bacilli isolated from used laboratory coats in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 66 isolates of Gram Negative Bacilli were isolated from used laboratory coats. Identification of the isolates was done using standard microbiological techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed using Kirby Bauer’s method. The double synergy test was used in detecting ESBL while detection of carbapenemases production was performed using Simplified Carbapenemase Inactivation Method (sCIM). A prevalance of 52(78.76%) ESBLs and 65(98.48%) carbapenemases producing Gram negative bacilli were recorded in this study. Klebsiella spp shows a notably high resistance rate 26 (83.81%), Citrobacter spp exhibits moderate resistance rates compared to the other two organisms. Enterobacter spp stands out with the lowest resistance rate 7(55.30%). Continuous and surveillance of hospital associated infections, including monitoring of antibiotics susceptibility pattern, constant washing of laboratory coats after use, avoidance of using a particular laboratory coats for a long period of time, embracing the use of disposable coats and removal of laboratory coats from Healthcare setting to safeguard both the medical personnels and their attending patients is advocated to aid the treatment, control and prevention of hospital acquired infections caused by ESBLs and carbapenem resistant Gram negative bacilli.
