ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae are important members of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause hospital and community-acquired infections such as( urinary tract infections) in pregnant women and other females. (Paterson and Bonomo, 2005 ; Pitout, 2008).Untreated upper UTI in pregnancy carries well documented risks of morbidity and rarely, mortality to the pregnant women (Nice, 2003).Hence, the aim of this study is to isolate, identify and determine urine ESBL production and multi-drug resistance among Enterobacteriaceae from clinical urine sample among pregnant women. A total of fifty (50) samples was aseptically collected from private hospital in Benin city, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and ESBL production was performed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method on Muller Hinton agar (MHA).Three (03) bacteria spieces was isolated namely; Pseudomonas aeruginosa ,Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The most predominant organism was, Klebsiella pneumoniae (60.00%).Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistance to all the antibiotics used except chloramphenicol.Out of the fifty-one (51) isolates forty-one (41) were multi-drug resistant. Only one isolate (,Klebsiella pneumoniae) produced ESBL. This study showed the presence of enterobacteriaceae in the urine samples of pregnant women which could be a major cause of UTI and poses a great threat to both mother and the foetus. Awareness programs on UTI is highly recommended and the need to expand services for improved and effective health care for prevention and treatment for pregnant women and the abuse of antibiotic drug is highly encouraged.
