ERROR ANALYSIS: THE CASE OF FUNKE AKINDELE’S JENNIFER’S DIARY

ABSTRACT

This study examined error analysis through Funke Akindele’s Jennifer’s Diary in order to show the level of errors the movie has impacted into youths, especially undergraduate students who are found of ‘Jennifer’s Language’. The study revealed that the errors I Jennifer’s Diary have negative influence on Nigeria youth/students in their academic performance. On the basis of this, certain measures have been suggested as a way of minimizing these errors. The findings with regards to learner errors revealed that Jennifer, which represents learners from local background commit the following errors: use of auxiliaries, tenses, concords, articles, prepositions, pronouns, plurals, mother tongue interference, infinitives and auxiliary with past tense. With regards to the use of all learners of English language with poor and local background has the tendency of either omitting or overgeneralizing the rule in the use of auxiliaries. Concerning the tense formation, the findings revealed that learners with Jennifer’s characteristics were not sure about tense formation.
