ABSTRACT
This study analyze errors in the use of tense among some selected secondary schools’ student in Ugbowo, Edo State. To direct the study, four research questions were formulated. The population comprises of 60 secondary students selected from three schools within Ugbowo. Data were collected using the primary method of data collection which involves collection of the students’ essay scripts through participant observation method. The data collected were analyzed using Corder’s theory. From the data analyzed, it was seen that the most frequently occurring errors is in the use of past tense followed by errors in the use of present tense while future tense error is the lowest.. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher suggests some steps to be taken in order to reduce errors in the use of English tenses. It was recommended that parents should help at home in correcting their children whenever they use inappropriate tenses. Also, the Teachers, governments and Media agencies all have their roles to play. Lastly, Students should also put in more efforts and get acquainted with the rules of the language as this would enable them use the language correctly.
