ABSTRACT
This study examines errors occurring in signposts and adverts. It identifies and describes errors in language use, with a focus on signposts and adverts around Benin City. Data were collected from locations such as Ugbowo and Oluku areas, and were analyzed using Corder’s four categorical classification model (omission, addition, selection and ordering) on error analysis. The study observed three types of errors: Orthographic, Lexical, and Grammatical errors. It was further observed that Lexical errors are more frequent in occurrence than the other errors identified in the signposts/adverts. The study, therefore, recommended that: (a) the English language curriculum in Nigeria should be revised to focus more on ensuring accuracy in the usage of lexical items; (b) retraining and refresher programmes should be organised for English language teachers, to ensure that they are abreast with the correct usage of the language for better pedagogy; (c) adequate measures such as setting up the appropriate agencies for screening signposts/adverts should be adopted by the Government. The study concludes that errors which are characteristic of a language learner, are deviations from the correct form of language use.
