ABSTRACT

This study examined the environmental factors affecting the teaching and learning of English language in senior secondary schools in Ugheli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The design of the study for this study is the survey research design method. The population for this study is public senior secondary schools and English teachers and students were selected. The simple random sampling technique method was employed to selected one hundred and twelve (112) respondents from five (5) public secondary schools in Ugheli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The instrument used to collect data for the study was a structured questionnaire.The researcher used the test-retest method of establishing reliability of the instrument. Five research questions was raised to guide the study and analyzed using the simple percentage method.The findings for this study are as follows, the learning environment affects the teaching and learning of English language, the emotional status of the student when not put into consideration will affect the teaching and learning of English language, when instructional material is not used properly it will affect the teaching and learning of English language, when the teacher does not make use of motivation it will affect the teaching and learning of English language, when the teacher does not engage students in extracurricular activities it will affect the overall development of English Language skills among students. Based on these findings, the following recommendation was made: the environment should be put into consideration before school is sited in a particular area, quality and adequate facilities should be provided in schools, Overcrowded classroom should be discouraged, Government should ensure the supervision of every school frequently, the National Policy on Education should be well implemented in every school and Parents should do a routine check of their child or children performance both at home and in school.
