ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND BROADCASTER PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA DELTA TELEVISION, BAYELSA STATE.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the relationship between environmental challenges and broadcaster performance in Niger Delta Television (NDTV), Bayelsa State. The Niger Delta region, known for its rich oil reserves, faces significant environmental issues such as oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation, which have severe socio-economic and health implications. The role of the media, particularly local broadcasters like NDTV, is crucial in raising awareness, informing the public, and influencing policy on these environmental issues. This research aims to assess how effectively NDTV covers environmental challenges and the factors influencing its performance. It examines the extent of environmental reporting, the challenges faced by broadcasters in covering these issues, and the impact of such coverage on public awareness and policy. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including content analysis of NDTV broadcasts, surveys of NDTV staff, and interviews with key stakeholders in Bayelsa State. The findings are expected to provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of environmental reporting by NDTV and offer recommendations for enhancing the role of local broadcasters in addressing environmental challenges in the Niger Delta. This research contributes to the broader discourse on media performance in environmental communication within resource-rich but ecologically vulnerable regions.
