ABSTRACT
Biological method of phytopathogen control is the use of microbial antagonists to suppress diseases of plants. Biological control agents are organisms that can inhibit the growth of other organisms. A lot or researches are being done towards discovering more biocontrol agents and how the antagonistic activities of these biocontrol agents can be enhanced. This is because other methods of phytopathogen control have serious limitations which includes not be ecofriendly, being harmful to humans, slow method and sometimes may not be effective. The aim of this research was to enhance the antagonistic potential of some bacterial isolates against some phytopathogens using UV radiation. Bacterial isolates to be investigated for biocontrol activities were isolated from the soil using serial dilution and pour 9 plate method while phytopathogens from Manihot esculentum were isolated using the direct plate method of microbial isolation. Pure cultures were gotten by streaking distinct bacterial colonies in a different culture medium with an inoculation loop in a sterile environment. Biochemical tests were conducted on these isolates and the isolates from the diseased Manihot esculenta were suspected to be Erwinia spp, Xanthomonas spp(1), Bacillus spp(1). Molecular results also showed that two other phytopathogens were Enterobacter ludwigii GM7 and Enterobacter hormacchei S36-2. Soil bacterial isolates were also suspected to be Sporosarcina spp, Micrococcus spp., Xanthomonas spp, Proteus spp, Alcaligen spp, Bacillus spp(2), Micrococcus spp.
