ABSTRACT

The study examined emotional intelligence, deviant workplace behaviour, and job performance of health workers in Nigerian public hospital in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria . Specifically, the study sought to empirically examine the extent to which emotional intelligence influence job performance of health workers and how deviant workplace behaviour of health workers negate the performance of health workers. A survey research design was adopted and the population of the study were drawn from medical practitioner which comprises mostly doctor and nurses at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Ugbowo, Benin City, Edo State. A sample of size of 200 respondents were conveniently selected. The study adopted the use of structured Questionnaires, tailored towards the objectives of the research, in obtaining data and responses from the respondents. Two hundred copies of questionnaire was distributed and 133 questionnaire was duly retrieved and used for the analysis. Data obtained from the respondents were analyzed using Descriptive statistics, mean, frequency, and Linear Regression models, Via the Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version20. The summary of the findings indicate a positive significant relationship between emotional intelligence and employee job performance this signifies that, the extent at which employee are able to manage their emotion. In contrast a negative significant relationship exist between deviant workplace behaviour and job performance and it has significant bearing on the employee job performance.
