EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND JOB PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN WARRI CITY, NIGERIA)

ABSTRACT

Emotional intelligence and job performance of private school teachers have emerged as influential constructs. Therefore, the current study conducted to explore correlation between emotional intelligence and job performance. Various vital features of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship are merged into emotional intelligence. These features have a profound statistical significant relation with job performance of private school teachers. The population of the present study was comprised teachers of five private schools in the city of Warri - Delta state, Nigeria. In this way, Sample of the study consisted of 100 teachers who were given questionnaires in which they self-evaluated themselves on the two variables; emotional intelligence and job performance. The collected data were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Mean, Standard Deviation, Frequency, Pearson product moment correlation and Regression analysis were used. The study revealed that statistically significant positive moderate relationship existed between emotional intelligence and job performance of private school teachers. Hence the various constructs of emotional intelligence explored in this study can be used to predict job performance. Emotional intelligence theory and its applications can be adopted by educational institutions to promote a healthy work culture and human resource practices.
