SUMMARY
Electoral malpractice which can be defined as the adoption of crude or various irregularities that mar the electioneering process can be said to have greatly hindered the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria. These various irregularities could be pre, during or after an election and could range from the electorate to security agents, the Independent National Electoral Commission officials and even the judiciary. Electoral malpractice can exist in different forms such as vote buying, underage voting, ballot snatching, falsification of result etc. These various forms of electoral malpractice have to a large extent retarded democratic development. As the saying goes, there is no smoke without a fire, hence what therefore encourages this negative trend in our society. The factors responsible for the high rate of electoral malpractice can be traced to the wrong political culture of Nigerians which are; crave for power, conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission which has led to distrust by the electorates, weakness of political parties, violent nature of politics as well as apathy towards governance.
