ABSTRACT
The study of the effect of the water-soluble fraction of spent lubricant oil on the growth of marine algae Tetraselmis sp and Chaetoceros sp was carried out in the laboratory for 14 days.
The microalgae were grown in seven different concentrations of 0%, 5%,10%,15%,20%,25% and 30% water soluble fraction of spent lubricant oil for both experimented algae.
The growth response of the microalgae in their different concentration was measured using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 750nm. The result showed that there was stimulatory growth for both algae. Lower concentration of spent lubricant, at 5% and 10% concentrations. There was a slow growth of algae at 15%, 20%, and 25% concentration of spent lubricant. For Chaetoceros 15% and 30% had a low growth rate while the other concentrations had a low growth rate. 0% to 30% concentration, there will be little or no inhibition on the growth rate of the algae. The result showed that Tetraselmis sp and Chaetoceros sp can be used for Bioremediation of spent Lubricant oil.
