ABSTRACT
High consumption of Monosodium glutamate a popular constituent of food additives for taste enhancement reportedly causes toxic effects on different organs and tissues which may eventually lead to organ failure., this toxicity was determined by administration of MSG at 800mg/kg on female albino wistar rats over a period of time. the plant Uraria picta belonging to the family leguminousa was investigated to have numerous medicinal values therefore the aim of this study was to determine the effect of Uraria picta methanol extract on MSG induced Toxicity. The Uraria Picta leaves were air dried, grounded and soaked in methanol for 72 hours, the extract was freeze dried, Animals were divided into four groups of five rats each, group 1 was administered 800mg/kg of MSG, group 2 was the normal control, group 3 was administered 100mg/kg of uraria Picta extract, group 4 was administered 250mg/kg of uraria Picta extract. The effect of administered dose of MSG showed significant increase (p<0.05) in serum iron levels relative to the control group, and no significant increase in serum ferritin levels. Groups 3 and 4 treated with Uraria picta extract at 100mg/kg and 250mg/ kg showed no significant difference (p>0.05) relative to the control group. Therefore, this experiment show that the Uraria picta extract was effective in maintenance of serum iron and Ferritin levels.
