ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the effects of stress on the academic performance of university students. The study focuses on the students in university of Benin. The objective of the study was to examine the perceived effects of stress on the academic performance of University students, identify the effects of stress on the academic performance in university students, the causes of stress on the academic performance of university students, identify the coping mechanisms used by students to deal with stress and it’s effects on the academic performance of university students. The survey research design was employed in the study. Ninety seven (97) students from the Faculty of education, University of Benin were selected using the simple random sampling technique across different levels. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire with 20 items. Based on the analyzed data and review of related literatures the findings made were; majority of the respondents accepted that stress generally affects the academic performance of students, increase in stress leads to a decrease in the academic performance of students. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, the researcher puts forward the following recommendations: researcher recommends that there should be students counseling program, awareness on the part of student can lead to greater academic performance, students should be trained on how to fight stress in order to improve on their academic performance.
