ABSTRACT
The presence of spent lubricating oil in the soil causes significant changes in the physical, chemical and microbiological aspects of soils. This makes soil unsuitable for plant growth. The present study was aimed at determining the effect of spent lubricating oil on the stem length of white beans and brown beans (Vigna unguiculata ). The seeds of V.unguiculata were planted in cotton wool beds(used as soil) placed in plastic containers. Three groups of the cotton wool beds was contaminated with the different fractions of the spent oil and one was used as control. The length of the stems were measured on the seventh and fourteenth day . The mean difference and standard deviation of stem length was calculated and used to analyze the effect of spent lubricating oil on the stem length of V.unguiculata . The stem length of the sample (V.unguiculata) planted in the control group ,increased progressively compared to stem length of samples planted in Water Soluble fraction , Water insoluble fraction and whole spent lubricating oil groups. The group with the poorest increase in stem length was the Whole spent lubricating oil (WSLO) having mean and SEM values of ;1.6±0.2 (White beans), 2.6±0.6 (Brown beans). The mean and SEM values of other groups include;Water insoluble fraction(WISF) 1.2±1.0(white beans), 3.6±0.5(Brown beans). Water Soluble fraction(WSF) 1.1±0.3(white beans), 3.9±1.6(brown beans).
