EFFECTS OF SOFT DRINK INDUSTRY EFFLUENT ON THE GROWTH OF MICROALGAE.

ABSTRACT

The beverage industry is a branch of the food industry that produces a wide range of goods, non-alcoholic, fruit juices, vegetable juices, mineral water, sparkling water, flavor-infused water, and soft drinks beverages. The test microalgae used for this experiment are Micrasterias thomasiana and Microspora sp., the objective of this research is to determine the effect of soft drink industry effluent on their growth. The microalgae species were grown in a medium and set-up for fourteen days (14).The concentration  control (0), 10%,20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, were used and for each concentration and the microalgal growth response were determined using a visible spectrophotometer at optical density of 750nm. Physiological parameters such as Temperature, pH, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids were analysed using standard methods. Inferential (one way analysis of variance) ANOVA repeated measures, Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and Turkey tests were performed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and the social sciences statistical tool SPSS20. The result revealed that t-test analysis shows that there was no significant difference in Micrasterias thomasiana and Microspora sp. with a percentage yield of (p < .05). The growth of Micrasterias thomasiana was determined by different concentrations of soft drink industry effluent, one way ANOVA showed that 20, 10%, 40%, had the highest growth, followed by control, 100%, 60%, 80% had their lowest growth. While the growth for Microspora sp showed that, control, 60%, 100%, concentrations had the highest growth, followed by 40%, 10%, 80%, 20%, had the lowest growth. The result physicochemical parameters such as Temperature, pH, TDS, and Conductivity. In conclusion, Micrasterias thomasiana had more stimulatory effect than Microspora
