ABSTRACT

Aquatic life forms have been endangered to different form of stress, which are a results of regular discharge of industrial waste water into rivers and streams, this dilemma is on an increase due to the rapid growth of industrialization and urbanization. Hence this study was carried out to evaluate the effect of 7-Up effluent on Pistia stratiotes plant. The research was done Ex-vitro using planting bowls that were not perforated, the effluents samples used in this study was gotten from two points (midstreampoints of brewery discharge and upstream before the discharge points) in Ikpoba River, while the test plant was gotten from an artificial pond in Department of plant Biology, Botanical gardens. The Results revealed that the 0% concentration of 7Up effluents, had higher chlorophyll content index, compared to plants that were cultured in 10%, 25%, 50% and 100% concentration of effluents, the chlorophyll content index of test plants ranged between (8.0-12.11 CCI). The number of leaves observed in p. stratiotes ranged from 4 – 12 from day 0 – 15 at varied concentration, root length (17 – 25 cm). The test plants performed well in 0 % 7Up waste water. As such it is expedient the waste that are being discarded into aquatic ecosystem could be treated and discarded into farmlands to enhance the growth of crops.
