EFFECTS OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN ANGIE THOMAS’ THE HATE YOU GIVE AND CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE’S AMERICANAH

ABSTRACT

This study shows the Writers’ Approach to the issue of Racial Discrimination in the American and British Societies that are exposed in Angie Thomas’s debut novel entitled The Hate You Give (2017) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s third novel Americanah (2013). The data used in this study was in the form of sentences and words taken from dialogues and narration of the novel. This study used documentation method, and the data analysis was done by applying the sociological approach proposed by Laurensen and Swingewood. The result of this analyses showed that the authors were influenced by extrinsic elements in writing the novels as both novels were analyzed using the Non-Formalistic literary criticism. Furthermore, the study used its analyzed data to show that Racism does not only affect the discriminated upon but also the discriminators and although both novels are works of fiction they are as realistic as can be as Angie Thomas’ The Hate You Give was written based on a real phenomenon that happened in America and Americanah was also written based on some of the personal experiences of the author Ngozi Chimamanda Adichie.
