ABSTRACT

A research was conducted at the screen house of the Department of Crop Science, University of Benin, Ugbowo Benin City, Edo State to evaluate the effect of Topsoil(TS)-Poultry manure(PM)/Rice husk(RH)/ Oil palm refuse bunch(OPRB) mixtures on the growth and yield of jute (Corchorus olitorius). The experiment laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) involving nine potting media; TS+PM1:1, TS+PM1:2, TS+PM2:1, TS+RH1:1, TS+RH1:2, TS+RH2:1 TS+OPRB1:1, TS+OPRB1:2, and TS+OPRB2:1 which were replicated 3 times. Data were collected on fresh weight, dry weight, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate and herbage yield. The potting media had varied physical and chemical properties. Potting media had significant effect on dry weight, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate and herbage yield. Topsoil and poultry manure mixed at a ratio 2:1 had the highest dry matter and herbage yield. However, TS+OPRB 1:2 had the highest crop growth rate. TS+PM 2:1 and TS+OPRB 1:2 is hereby suggested as a soilless medium for the cultivation of jute plant.
