ABSTRACT
This study aimed to determine the effects of a Paxherbal bitters on inflammation and Antioxidant Status in male Wistar rats fed a high fructose diet. Atorvastatin, the statin drug mainly used in treating dyslipidemia, was used to compare the efficacy of the bitters. The experiment was conducted using standard laboratory materials, procedures, and assay protocols. 20 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups and fed ad libitum for four weeks. Group 1 received a basal diet of standard pelleted mash and clean tap water, while all other groups took an experimental diet of 60% fructose diet and 10% fructose water. Group 3 and Group 4 were additionally treated with Atorvastatin and Paxherbal bitters, respectively, given through orogastric gavage on a daily basis. Their daily food and water consumption, feed efficiency and weight gained were carefully noted on a periodic basis. The rats were also observed for signs of toxicity or mortality. At the end of the experimental period, after they were sacrificed, the rats' blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis and organs like their livers, kidneys, and hearts were weighed. The data was analysed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's multiple comparison post hoc test, and only a p value < (0.05) was taken as statistically significant. The results showed that the negative control (group 2) showed a significant increase in hsCRP and MDA levels while also showing a decrease in TAC levels when compared to the (normal control) group 1. Paxherbal bitters demonstrated statistically significant (p<0.05) efficacy in lowering hsCRP, reducing MDA levels, and bolstering TAC levels when compared to the negative control. Therefore, this study offers insight into the potential of paxherbal bitters as an alternative natural therapeutic agent with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties providing a comprehensive strategy to mitigate effects of a high fructose diet.
